When The Police released Every Breath You Take, they were no strangers to success. They had already topped the UK charts 4 times, and had a number one hit on the US mainstream rock chart. But even their previous mega-hits like Don’t Stand So Close to Me and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic failed to make the top spot on the US pop charts.
Every Breath You Take put an end to The Police’s underachievement on the US charts, and the video won accolades of its own. It won the first ever MTV cinematography award, in 1999 MTV named it the 16th best video ever made, and in 2002 VH1 named it the 33rd best video ever.
