[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Elvis Presley[/lastfm] was a singer, musician, and an actor. But he was also an interpreter of music. Some of the King’s most memorable songs were songs that he covered.

Hound Dog

Originally written by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jerry Leiber[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mike Stoller[/lastfm] for blues singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Big Mama Thornton[/lastfm] in 1953. Thornton belted out her version in a gritty, slow blues style. Elvis took a more humorous interpretation to the song.

Are You Lonesome Tonight

Recorded in 1927 by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Al Jolson[/lastfm], “Are You Lonesome Tonight” was released in 1960 by Elvis. The song earned him three Grammys.

Bridge Over Troubled Water

[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Paul Simon[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Art Garfunkel[/lastfm] recorded their number #1 hit in 1970. Elvis recorded his version, during the filming of Elvis — That’s the Way It Is.

My Way

Ol’ Blue Eyes, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Frank Sinatra[/lastfm], recorded his anthem to independence and individuality in 1969. Elvis sang his version on the Aloha from Hawaii tv special and in concert during the 70’s. A recording of the song was released shortly after Elvis died, making the song sort of a declaration of his life.

Here are two of my personal favorite cover songs from Elvis.

Sweet Caroline

One of Neil Diamond’s biggest hits, Elvis performed his version in 1970 for his live album and concert film, That’s the Way It Is.

You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling

Recorded in 1964, this number #1 hit from [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Righteous Brothers[/lastfm] has been covered many times. [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Hall & Oates[/lastfm] had their version and Tom Cruise even lent his vocal styling to it in the film,  Top Gun. Elvis sang his version in 1970 for his live album and concert film, That’s the Way It Is.
