We searched through the house last night to put together the items we might need in case of a power outage. Here’s what we came up with: Flashlights with no batteries, candles with no matches, and cans of food with no non-electric can opener!  Read on for a helpful list of things your family should have on hand for the winter storm:

  • Non-Perishable Food:  A few days supply of canned goods or boxed food that doesn’t need refrigeration. Refrigerated and frozen food can be put outside during a long power outage.
  • Can Opener: An electric opener won’t work during a power outage (duh) so make sure you have a manual opener!
  • Shovel: This is needed for digging out if there is need to get outside or to create access for incoming emergency services.
  • Rock Salt: It is good to have this on hand to melt the ice on shovelled walkways, driveways and porches.
  • Matches and Candles: It’s a good idea to keep matches on hand, because lighters may run out of fuel.
  • Extra Blankets and Warm Clothing
  • Flashlights and Battery Radio: Make sure you have batteries in the proper sizes for everything!
  • Non-Battery Household Phone
  • Extra Essential Items: Prescription medicine, diapers, baby food, pet food, and toiletries.
  • Entertainment Items: What will the kids do if the XBOX won’t work? Have a supply of board games, books and magazines, and a deck of cards to keep everyone from going stir-crazy!
