This spring’s most anticipated film set new box office records after its release this weekend in theaters nationwide. The Hunger Games opened to $155 million, making it the biggest non-sequel opening in history.
The film, which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Lenny Kravitz among others, is the first film adaptation from the three-part best-selling young adult series by Suzanne Collins. Box Office Mojo editor Gitesh Pandya says that part of the film’s huge opening weekend was due to smart marketing tactics from Lionsgate:
Marketing was a key component to the massive debut, as the film wasn’t over-promoted to the point of repelling people. Lionsgate turned the opening weekend of ‘Hunger Games’ into the hottest party around and nobody wanted to be left out.
