A new documentary coming to a theater near you will finally bring the “unknown” backup singers to the forefront.

The  film that is way overdue, is called “20 Feet From Stardom.”  One voice that is predominantly featured in the film is that of Merry Clayton.

You may not know her name, but I guarantee you’ve heard her voice. If you have ever heard Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help From My Friends,”  David Bowie’s “Young Americans,” “Respect” from Aretha Franklin, or The Rolling Stones “Gimmie Shelter.”   Shall I go on? You’ve heard her voice but didn’t even realize it.

This film, finally, puts a face to some of the most widely used backup singers in the business.

“20 Feet From Stardom” is currently in limited release but with any luck, nationwide very soon.

Here’s an interview with Merry Clayton.

Here’s the official trailer!
