Christina Aguilera, who graces the November cover of Redbook magazine, has returned as a judge on NBC’s The Voice after taking a season off.

She shared with the mag why she initially left, saying, “I needed to decompress, wind down the clock and just breathe. I needed to find out who I am outside of that red chair. We did three seasons, and I wanted to disengage and have my life back and be with my son—put my sweatpants on and wipe my makeup off.”

As she prepares for another season of sitting in the judges seat on The Voice she also shared with Redbook how fellow judges Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Adam Levine are like family. “I know these guys so well, they really are like my brothers, no joke. There’s a 12 year-old-boy in me who loves to come out and play with them,” Aguilera said.

The singer also spoke to Redbook about being a protective mom in terms of his care and well-being, while reflecting on her own childhood.”I saw my mom have a rough time with my dad being very controlling, which is why I push back whenever I feel like someone is trying to box me in,” said Aguilera.
